January Update

First, I want to start off by saying Happy New Year to whoever is reading this!

Service Hours: 3 hours

    Starting back very early in January was a little bit of a challenge, but being online made it better. So far we have covered parts of the endocrine module dealing with both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. We also briefly covered the thyroid dealing with hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and the many diseases that presented from each. Out of the two, I really enjoyed the medications module dealing with diabetes because it was interesting to learn more about the various regimens being followed by individuals with either disease. 

    This month, I did a total of three service hours with my sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Because our motto is "Service to All Mankind,"  for our Martin Luther King, Jr. day of service project, we hosted a 'Pop Your Trunk' donation drive along with our undergraduate chapter Omicron Psi of Tulane University. We partnered with Odyssey House Louisiana where we, the members of Omicron Lambda Omega and Omicron Psi Chapters, donated goods, as well as stood outside holding up various signs to promote the drive that was taking place for those passing. Odyssey House Louisiana asked that donations of razors, towels, toothbrushes, lotion, deodorant, etc. be donated. Our drive was held between the hours of 10 AM - 12 PM. 30 minutes prior to and following the event, we helped the workers at Odyssey house set up the trunks and gather/organize donated items in a designated area.

February Update

 Total Service Hours: 3 I hope everyone had a great Mardi Gras! For the month of February I did not complete any service hours. While I was unable to perform any service this month, I did complete my application to volunteer with Children's Hospital of New Orleans again. Starting this March, I plan to begin volunteering with them before or after class and on the weekends. I also took this month to create and start working on my full plan for this upcoming medical school application cycle for the c/o 2027. I was able to take this month to start working on my personal statement and questions about my extracurricular and volunteering experiences. During this month I also scheduled my MCAT and the MCAT classes I plan on starting this semester so that I can stay on track with both school and preparing for medical school applications simultaneously.  Within this month, it was interesting to learn further detail about contraception and the differences between migraines and the many types

November Update

November Hours: 5 Cumulative Hours: 13      I hope each one of you who is reading this had an awesome Thanksgiving! My Thanksgiving was filled with plenty of happiness and relaxation. Overall, November was a good month. I conducted 1-2 hours of service with my class and 3 hours of service with one of my best friends from high school. As a class, we made Thanksgiving cards that were to be passed out to various children across the lake who did not have homes/families to go to for the holidays. Uma instructed us how to make the cards, and it was an enjoyable experience to participate in. With my best friend, we attended Second Harvest Food Bank's main Thanksgiving service day where we helped pre-package meals for those who were not fortunate enough to enjoy a home-cooked Thanksgiving meal. April Update

Cumulative Service Hours: 21 April Service Hours: 14 All good things must come to an end! April was our last month of classes, assignments, and exams within the Biomedical Sciences Pharmacology M.S. Program at Tulane University. This past semester has been really good, and I really enjoyed learning Pharmacology from the different views that every elective offered to us; it gave us further insight as to how pharmacology is utilized in many realms in the field of medicine and/or science. The electives that were taken were Neuropharmacology, Environmental Signaling, Cellular Control Mechanisms, and Endocrine Pharmacology. Out of the many electives that we took this semester, I enjoyed Endocrine Pharmacology the most by Dr. Sarah Lindsey.
