April Update

Cumulative Service Hours: 21

April Service Hours: 14

All good things must come to an end!

April was our last month of classes, assignments, and exams within the Biomedical Sciences Pharmacology M.S. Program at Tulane University. This past semester has been really good, and I really enjoyed learning Pharmacology from the different views that every elective offered to us; it gave us further insight as to how pharmacology is utilized in many realms in the field of medicine and/or science. The electives that were taken were Neuropharmacology, Environmental Signaling, Cellular Control Mechanisms, and Endocrine Pharmacology. Out of the many electives that we took this semester, I enjoyed Endocrine Pharmacology the most by Dr. Sarah Lindsey. It was really interesting because we learned how stress contributed to health from many different angles of human physiology. We each, in a group, had to present a specific target of the human body that was affected either positively or negatively in response to undergoing stress. We were guided by the readings given to us of Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers by Robert Sapolsky. I really enjoyed the class because while it taught me more about stress, it also taught me to be more vigilant towards stressful encounters and how they can negatively impact my health.

While class was great this past month, service went well, too. I was able to participate in a service project for Global Impact Day on April 8, 2022 with my sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Three hours of service was conducted on this day. One hour was spent prepping and cleaning up, while two hours was conducted holding the event, showing the short films, and allowing an open-floor discussion to take place. I facilitated the checking in process for individuals and helped individuals submit any donations that were given towards our partnering companies: Soles4Souls, Polaris Project, and World Food Kitchen. The main purpose of the event was to inform individuals of the global issues that were encountering around the world and discuss how we may serve as help to others in need.

For the remainder of my 11 service hours during April, I spent an 8-hour shift with Second Harvest at one of there food pantries near my house. There we passed out pre-made boxes of meals and other non-perishable items to those in need who lived in the surrounding parish of Jefferson Parish. For another day, I spent 3 hours at Second Harvest Food Bank New Orleans helping with the sorting and boxing process.
