January Update

Image
First, I want to start off by saying Happy New Year to whoever is reading this! Service Hours: 3 hours      Starting back very early in January was a little bit of a challenge, but being online made it better. So far we have covered parts of the endocrine module dealing with both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. We also briefly covered the thyroid dealing with hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and the many diseases that presented from each. Out of the two, I really enjoyed the medications module dealing with diabetes because it was interesting to learn more about the various regimens being followed by individuals with either disease.      This month, I did a total of three service hours with my sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Because our motto is "Service to All Mankind,"  for our Martin Luther King, Jr. day of service project, we hosted a 'Pop Your Trunk' donation drive along with our undergraduate chapter Omicron Psi of Tulane University...

November Update

November Hours: 5 Cumulative Hours: 13      I hope each one of you who is reading this had an awesome Thanksgiving! My Thanksgiving was filled with plenty of happiness and relaxation. Overall, November was a good month. I conducted 1-2 hours of service with my class and 3 hours of service with one of my best friends from high school. As a class, we made Thanksgiving cards that were to be passed out to various children across the lake who did not have homes/families to go to for the holidays. Uma instructed us how to make the cards, and it was an enjoyable experience to participate in. With my best friend, we attended Second Harvest Food Bank's main Thanksgiving service day where we helped pre-package meals for those who were not fortunate enough to enjoy a home-cooked Thanksgiving meal. That took place the morning before Thanksgiving, and meals were sent out later that afternoon and evening. Some of the meals were also passed out on Thanksgiving Day to many individuals wh...

October Update

October Community Service Hours: 5 The month of October was a good month for both academics and community service. During the month, our classes exposed us to more drug lists, and we learned in greater detail about cardiac mechanisms along with the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system. It was interesting to learn about EKGs in greater detail and learn how to determine which drugs were being distributed by paying attention to intervals on them. The video we viewed of the lab was a great learning point in my opinion. I also enjoyed the various topics that were presented to us during the month from our seminar speakers. Dr. Richard-Davis was overall my favorite speaker because health disparities involving race and income are still very prevalent today and I think the school she works at has set forth a great initiative to attack the problem head on starting at the student level and community level. During the month of October, I was able to take a small trip to Califo...

September Update

September Community Service Hours: 3 The month of September was on the more challenging side due to Hurricane Ida, but it was an interesting month as well due to all of the mixed pandemic and hurricane chaos that was taking place in New Orleans and the surrounding parishes. Due to hurricane Ida, my family had evacuated, and we had to remain evacuated for nearly the entire month due to major loss of power for an extended time and minor house damage due to wind and rain. Although the hurricane put a halt to the city of New Orleans, I was still able to volunteer one day with Second Harvest Food Bank in Elmwood upon returning to the city. While I'm used to going there actively since high school, it was a great feeling knowing that I was helping victims within the city I am from and that I still reside in. While I enjoyed the virtual side of class, I am happy that none of my fellow classmates or faculty sustained severe damages that would prolong their return to both their homes and ca...
